Script

(Man walks to center stage.)

Light! I did not know "light". I was born in darkness. It was said I was born into sin and thus born blind. For most of my life these were my eyes (holding up hands). But they did not know light. I was like a caterpillar trapped in its cocoon, never to be free and never to see. Days and years passed as I reached out to the shuffling feet moving around me. I begged for food. For clothing. For my life. Some would give but most walked by.

One day a group of men stopped in front of me. They asked one man who was with them why I was born blind. He said "Neither this man nor his parents sinned but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world".

The Light of the world? What light? Talk of light to a man born blind!

I heard him spit into the dirt and mix the spit into mud. I felt his fingers on my eyes, spreading the sticky mud across them. I resisted. What was this man doing to me? Why doesn't he leave me alone? He stopped. He told me to wash at the pool. I was led there and I flushed my eyes with water.

What happened next…..was a miracle! I washed away the mud…..and then……LIGHT! Glorious light!! Like the butterfly emerging from its cocoon realizing its wings for the first time, I knew light!

Many did not believe what had happened. Some said the man who did this was a sinner. I said I did not know whether he was a sinner or not. I only know that I was blind but now I see. I was thrown out.

The man came to me and asked if I believed in him. I said (kneels) "Lord, I believe." And the black darkness left me again. First, he took the darkness from my eyes. Now he took it from my soul. I believe in him. He is the light of the world. Believe in him and see the glorious light!
